Basic Distinctions Between Classical Guitar & Folk Guitar

(Yao Shisan, famous folk musician and guitarist in China)

An increasing number of young people are crazy for acoustic guitar and many of them attempt to learn to play. Basically, there are four types of acoustic guitars: flat guitar (also known as folk guitar), classical guitars, arch guitar (also known as jazz guitar) and flamenco guitar. The first two are more popular among guitar lovers. However, many people are confused about the difference between these two types, due to their similarities   in appearance. Today I would like to introduce some methods of differentiating these two types of guitar.

1. The first difference between folk and classical guitars is the material used for the strings. Classical guitars are strung with nylon, which gives a sweet, gentle, slightly muted sound, while folk guitars use the steel strings that bring brighter and louder sounds.

2. Usually classical guitars have wider necks, which allow classical guitarists to play individual notes with their fingers easier. In addition, classical guitars usually have a longer string length from head to bridge.

3. Due to the low-tension of nylon strings, classical guitars are often recommended for beginners. But the type of guitar depends on the musical road you choose. Folk guitar are suitable for people who prefer folk, pop or rock styles, while classical guitar are perfect for classical music or solo fingerstyle players.

4. Classical guitars ask for higher standard and skill  than folk guitar playing. One can play folk guitar sitting, standing, walking or whatever you like. However, classical guitar must be played when sitting. Moreover, playing classical guitar should have ability of reading staff, which is not necessary for folk guitarists.

Rome was not built in a day, perfect guitar skills require hard work and long-term commitment. No matter what kind of guitar, only by continuous practice can one achieve perfection in playing guitar.

How To Overcome the Reputation Challenge Apple Now Faces?

Voted America’s Most Admired Company since 2008 by Forbes, Apple’s leadership and influence in technology are beyond doubt, but it is also true that questions about the innovation ability swirl around the company with the end of the Steven Jobs era, which I am sure has already come to Jim’s attention. Potential causes are:

•     Certain technical failures, such as the mapping system debacle, incompatibility with NFC or with Apple TV, and few-inquire music social network, Ping;

•     Work issues in oversea factories, especially the labor violations within Chinese suppliers, face growing criticism and tarnish Apple’s reputation and performance;

•     New generation products disappoint consumers for lack of spotlight. An increased competition with Google, Samsung, and Microsoft is heating up.

To overcome those current threats, strategic public relations could play a big role by conducting more effective communication to both internal and external audiences. A few suggestions are listed below.

  • Employee Relations:Create greater transparency from top management to the bottom suppliers’ factories, and build universal identity and loyalty.
    • Set up new standards for partners suppliers and performing audit at bottom factories to make sure that new rules can be well complied with;
    • Emphasize one suppliers’ importance to Apple’s success, drive improvement to working conditions;
    • Create honest, open and consistent communication channels to make voice heard from the bottom.

  • Media Relations: Step up efforts to counter negative media reports and direct public opinions in a favorable way.
    • Emphasize work issues as a result of ineffective communication, not problem in managerial performance, corporate culture or product quality;
    • Committed to full cooperation with reporters as a way to have more favorable third-party studies and press releases accessible to the public as a way to show the likelihood for continued growth in Apple’s future;
    • Avoid specific comparison with other products, as a way to keep leadership figure in technique area;
    • Emphasize the idea of “Inheritance and Innovation”, which Cook’s team moves forward with.

  • Government Relation: Expand lobbying efforts to win more favorable policy and political support to certain issues.
    • Meet with government officials, lawmakers or congressman in an effort to emphasize Apple’s importance to the American economy and job;
    • Guide public opinions into favorable direction with the aid of government’s influence on media;
    • Make proactive communication with National Survey Investigation Department about work issues as a way to gain their support.

  • Customer Relations: Build a consistent, open and honest communication with their consumers.
    • Admit responsibility for temporary technique failures;
    • Take early action to complaints to avoid their further deterioration;
    • Create friendly environments and deliver consistently great customer experiences to help them regain confidence to Apple’s performance.
